Update: The project was successfully completed - see the video on the project page!
OC Robotics and TWI Ltd have joined forces to integrate a 5kW fibre laser into a flexible Explorer snake-arm robot. This combination of technologies enables a remote-controlled selective approach to dismantling and decommissioning in confined spaces, with the ability to cut thick steel and concrete with minimal reaction forces.
OC Robotics has delivered robots for use in confined and hazardous environments for a wide-range of industries including nuclear, aerospace and security.
TWI Ltd has performed pioneering work in the use of lasers for nuclear decommissioning, particularly related to enhancing the technology readiness level of laser cutting and laser scabbling.
