User Guide

This short user-guide video introduces the basics of using Snake-Arm Simulator; including:

  • Adjusting the camera view
  • Snake-arm and environment selection
  • Controlling the snake-arm in ‘Snake’ and 'Cartesian' modes

Getting Started

To select an environment model, click the environment drop-down menu and select your desired environment.
Then, to select a Snake-Arm, click the Snake-Arm drop-down menu and select the desired robot.

Moving The Camera

To rotate the scene view model, drag the left mouse button around the view.
Scroll the mouse wheel to zoom in and out of the scene view model.
To move the scene view model, hold the right mouse button and drag the cursor around the view.
The '+' button found in the top right corner of each view will expand the view.
The scene model's outer layer can be made transparent by clicking the transparency button.

Driving The Snake

To drive the snake using a gamepad, use the left thumbstick to drive the snake forwards and backwards and use the right thumbstick to direct the snake.

To drive the snake using keyboard, in the Camera View (left screen), click the mouse in the direction you want the snake to go.
The up key moves the snake forward and the down key reverses the snake.

Mastering Cartesian Mode

To go into Cartesian mode, first ensure you have driven the snake far enough into the environment and then click the Cartesian button in the top right of the screen.
To move the snake using a gamepad, rotate the left thumbstick.
To move the snake using a keyboard, in the camera view, drag the mouse towards the direction you want to move.
